A finely rendered 19th-century maritime watercolor by English artist Henry Andrews Luscombe, depicting a stately frigate at anchor in a tranquil harbor. Smaller vessels and distant ships animate the composition, while Luscombe’s delicate treatment of the water, rigging, and softly illuminated sky creates a serene sense of depth and atmosphere.
An inscription on the reverse traditionally identifies the central vessel as the “Emerald, Frigate, 50 Guns.” The reverse also records Luscombe as a Plymouth-born English painter working in oil and watercolor, active in Plymouth between approximately 1845 and 1865, and exhibiting at the Royal Academy.
